Trip to Bonaire with my parents (Lynn and Bob) and Raj's mom (Judy).
12/2/03 - Lynn, Bob, Raj and I flew from Newark to Puerto Rico and decided to wander around Fort San Felipe del Morro during our six hour layover. We got back to the airport and met up with Judy then waited for our flight. We made it to the plane, got ourselves comfy and tried to take off. Unfortunately, putting my parents, Judy and I on one plane ensures that the plane will break - we didn't make it off the runway. We went back to the airport, got some beer and waited for the call back to the plane. The call never came but American put us up for the night in the Park Plaza Normandie San Juan. They also gave us our luggage; turns out the Newark Transportation Safety Administration can't figure out how to push a button and had to bash the crap out of the suitcase that contained our dive gear in order to ensure passenger safety. The clasps on the suitcase no longer worked, but they were nice enough to tape it (sort of) closed. Luckily we didn't lose anything.
12/3/03 - We finally made it to Bonaire! We checked into Aqua Viva, had lunch at City Beach, then Lynn and Bob bought themselves snorkeling gear. We were eager to go in the water, so everyone but Bob went snorkeling at Plaza Resort (Bob hit the grocery store and farmer's market instead and bought us tasty food). We had dinner at Lighthouse Bar & Grill.
12/4/03 - Bob made breakfast, then we were off to downtown Kralendijk for sightseeing and shopping. Raj and I rented gear from Wannadive at Eden Beach Resort (unlimited tanks - hooray!) then we dove at Eden Beach while the parents snorkeled. We had drinks at Lynn and Bob's and followed that with dinner at Captain Don's Habitat. I got lots of mosquito bites.
12/5/03 - Bob made us breakfast again then we headed to the Hilma Hooker for more diving and snorkeling. The book said it was an easy site, but it was rocky and surfy and most of us got worked over on the rocks (except for Bob, who insists that his injuries were from a lionfish attack). We recovered from our wounds enough to return to our hotel, get dressed and walk up the street to the right in search of lunch. We were too late - no one was serving lunch anymore but we did find an iguana, a donkey, and some potential places for dinner. Lunch came from the grocery store. We had dinner at Eden Beach's beach barbecue.
12/6/03 - Early morning dive at 1000 Steps, Bob made us omelets for breakfast, then Lynn did a Resort Certification class at Captain Don's while Raj and I dove at Captain Don's and Judy and Bob went to Kralendijk for more shopping. We had lunch at Captain Don's and saw a large iguana, then dropped the parents off at Aqua Viva so Raj and I could head to town to shop and check out some hotels (he's trying to plan a spring break trip there for the scuba club). Drinks at Lynn and Bob's, dinner at Mango's. Weather channel said there was a big snow storm on the east coast - we were happy in the heat.
12/7/03 - I slept in while everyone else toured the north end of the island. We had lunch at Zee Zicht then Raj, Lynn and I went to Town Pier with Dee Starr. My ears were bothering me so I snorkeled while they dove (Lynn says "wow, that was fun!"). Dinner at the Harbour Village Beach Club.
12/8/03 - Last full day in Bonaire. We drove south, stopping for the slave huts, flamingos and windsurfers. We were heading to the Lac Bay Mangrove Forest for kayaking. The Mangrove Info & Kayak Center provided the kayaks and Ben, who toured us around. We had lunch at Kontiki then drove home. Lynn and Bob almost had a donkey in their room (and would have if we hadn't stopped Raj from trying to coax it in). We checked out a couple hotels and ended the day with dinner at Plaza Resort.
12/9/03 - We had an early flight (yawn) home.
